Beneficial insects in farmingUsing protective structures such as polytunnels has helped with encouraging the widespread use of natural enemies for pest control. This is where a particular pest insect is targeted with another insect which is one of its natural predators. This entirely natural method of pest control is helped by the warm environment and enclosed space of polytunnels. Without them, the use of natural enemies to control pests would be less widespread and less effective. The large fields at Tuesley Farm have been divided into 10-acre blocks, and around each field we are establishing wildlife/beetle banks/margins and indigenous hedge species. We aim to create an environment for insects that will help control damaging pests. This will allow us to reduce further the need for protectants. |
